Good Grief Returns to Platte Forum for an Encore Performance Tonight

Stories of fighting to be seen as you are. Tales of pain, sorrow, and loss. A song is crooned to a corner, before opening into a syncopated riff on what it’s like to be a teenage girl, this teenage girl. Snaps urge another young poet to the stage.

Every story is different, every story is individual. But one thing is the same…a longing, and deep personal tales of hurt.

“I am what I say I am, I am what everybody doesn’t know”

“I tell them its ok whenever I cry, but truly deep down I know it’s a lie”

“Invisible, a lost soul and a broken heart holds you back from success”

“My best friend was never coming home again”

I try to hide behind the lyrics of my favorite song - hoping that as long as I stay here my words will stay strong”

One after one, the students that joined the latest artist in residence, Andrea Moore, came up and performed their deeply personal stories in front of one of the largest crowds I’ve seen at PlatteForum. And to raves, screams, and roaring applause. Standing ovations.

It is rare, in my experience, that there are openings two nights in a row at PlatteForum. And I just have to tell you about this one…it moved me in such a profound way. The current artist in residence, Andrea Moore, is a poet, performance artist and photographer, and she believes that active participation – in her community and beyond – is critical. That led her to apply for a creative residency at PlatteForum, and the gift that she gave over the course of the last 8 weeks in residence was extraordinary.

Andrea worked with a group of 10 students from the Third Way Center at the Joan Farley Academy, a residential treatment and education center for troubled teens and families.

The result was heartfelt and mind-blowing. And you are in luck – there is one more performance tonight. So get yourself over to PlatteForum, right here in our own Riverfront Park, 1610 Little Raven Street, Suite 135 (in the back of Park Place) at 6:00 to get a seat – it was standing room only last night – and see the future. And crack open a little place in your heart you might not have even known was there.

It’s hard to find a city in America that isn’t planning, proposing, studying or actually building a light rail system. Cities as diverse as Dallas, Seattle and Washington, D.C., all see light rail as part of their future — a way to reshape their development. There are 35 light rail systems operating in the U.S. today. At least 13 metro areas are currently building others. Many more are being planned. Perhaps the most ambitious light rail project in the country is being built in Denver. Downtown, behind Union Station, lies a cityscape that doesn’t quite exist yet. Much of the area is empty, fenced off. Construction crews are digging a huge hole in the ground in preparation for some of the final stages of a multiyear transportation project that is already changing the city.

Rick Antsy is back in town and, fortunately for us, updating us again on the progress at Union Station. Pretty amazing to walk up on the Millennium Bridge right now. The Station is just coming to life. Now that the walls are, in the light rail station is under construction, and the roof is going on the bus barn, it’s easier to appreciate the scale and mass of the whole project. Really, it never ceases to amaze me.

LoDo Named One of America’s “Great Neighborhoods”

LoDo was named one of ten “great neighborhoods” in the U.S. The American Planning Association, a not-for-profit group that helps develop communities, put together a list of the nation’s best neighborhoods that feature unique and authentic characteristics. This includes planning, architectural styles, accessibility and community involvement. Mayor Hickenlooper said in a statement “The national recognition of Denver’s LoDo district as one of our country’s great places is a welcome reward to the many civic and business leaders in our community whose vision, determination and collaboration over the past 30 years have preserved and revitalized this historic neighborhood.” It’s great when Denver gets recognized on a national scale as one of the best places to live.
