Kael received her first Brazilet while traveling through South America. It was given to her by a friend and said to bring luck and answer wishes for whoever wears it. Brazilets, brightly colored cloth bracelets, are a 200-year-old tradition from mystical Bahia, Brazil. They are a tradition that has seen a huge resurgence in the past few years as a fashion statement. When the bracelet material wears down and the Brazilet falls off naturally, it is believed that the wearers’ wishes will come true. In Brazil you will see people with as many as 30 Brazilets on their wrist at one time. Many people tie on a new as soon as one appears close to falling off, never wanting to be without the protection. It is not uncommon to see wedding cakes decorated with colorful bracelets.
So how did Kael Robinson, a twenty-something ONE Riverfront resident, end up starting a Brazilian bracelet company in Denver? Kael grew up in Philadelphia and headed west to attend the University of Denver, graduating in 2005. Following stints in New York at Vera Wang, Boston with Talbot’s and Saks Fifth Avenue in Denver, she decided that Denver fit her outdoor lifestyle (skiing, golf, tennis, lacrosse) the best and wanted to make a difference. She was involved with environmental issues while at DU and ended up partnering with PlantABillion, a Nature Conservancy project that will plant a billion trees in the Atlantic Forest of the Brazilian Rainforest. Twenty percent of each Brazilet sold goes to PlantABillion, so each bracelet plants a tree.
Kael has the exclusive rights to import the bracelets from the Brazilian manufacture and has a distribution network that includes Aspen, Boulder, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami, Rome and Dubai.
