Good Grief Returns to Platte Forum for an Encore Performance Tonight

Stories of fighting to be seen as you are.  Tales of pain, sorrow, and loss.  A song is crooned to a corner, before opening into a syncopated riff on what it’s like to be a teenage girl, this teenage girl.  Snaps urge another young poet to the stage.

Every story is different, every story is individual.  But one thing is the same…a longing, and deep personal tales of hurt.

“I am what I say I am, I am what everybody doesn’t know”

“I tell them its ok whenever I cry, but truly deep down I know it’s a lie”

“Invisible, a lost soul and a broken heart holds you back from success”

“My best friend was never coming home again”

I try to hide behind the lyrics of my favorite song - hoping that as long as I stay here my words will stay strong”

One after one, the students that joined the latest artist in residence, Andrea Moore, came up and performed their deeply personal stories in front of one of the largest crowds I’ve seen at PlatteForum.  And to raves, screams, and roaring applause.  Standing ovations.

It is rare, in my experience, that there are openings two nights in a row at PlatteForum.  And I just have to tell you about this one…it moved me in such a profound way.  The current artist in residence, Andrea Moore, is a poet, performance artist and photographer, and she believes that active participation – in her community and beyond – is critical.  That led her to apply for a creative residency at PlatteForum, and the gift that she gave over the course of the last 8 weeks in residence was extraordinary.

Andrea worked with a group of 10 students from the Third Way Center at the Joan Farley Academy, a residential treatment and education center for troubled teens and families.

The result was heartfelt and mind-blowing.  And you are in luck – there is one more performance tonight.  So get yourself over to PlatteForum, right here in our own Riverfront Park, 1610 Little Raven Street, Suite 135 (in the back of Park Place) at 6:00 to get a seat – it was standing room only last night – and see the future.  And crack open a little place in your heart you might not have even known was there.

Good Grief is a one-woman performance and exhibit Andrea created in response to the death of her father four years ago.  The material reflects on personal and cultural perceptions of grief with a particular emphasis on the pressure in American culture to make sense of loss and rebound quickly. Andrea stretches this notion to its extreme, using graphs, numerical data, and information batching to visually quantify an experience that defies linear expression.  She also employs performance poetry and storytelling to connect the dots and give context to the visual art.real estate contract |real estate contracts

Andrea’s creative process mirrors her own grief experience: in the moment, the work is reactionary, disconnected, and responsive.  Only in hindsight is it possible to make “sense” of the journey and isolate themes and through lines. The writing and performance explore two main tensions – our infinite desires cannot be satisfied by finite resources, and grief flares when our core assumptions and expectations are replaced by reality. cafepress coupon code | cafepress coupon | cafepress promo code

our infinite desires cannot be satisfied by finite resources, and grief flares when our core assumptions and expectations are replaced by reality.  The work is bolstered by photographs exploring these themes, including portraits of children in Uganda who have been orphaned, primarily by AIDS, as well as portraits of Andrea’s father in the final days of his illness and of his body after his passing.cafepress coupon code | cafepress coupon | cafepress promo code

Andrea’s goal was for each student to work toward developing a single, memorized slam poem that they could perform at any of the various open mics around the city. The process was amazing to watch as the youth each expressed their unique voices through poetry. Slam poetry is a powerful art form that resonates through the space, filling the gallery with passion, angst and possibilitiesWedding Locations in Ventura County | Wedding Venues in Ventura County

I feel we need to raise our expectations for students by making school more challenging and interesting. Doing so will help kids understand what is at stake if they drop out of school or if they don’t take school seriously. The quality of each student’s life and our nation’s economic competitiveness depends on it.

During her residency, Andrea led an intense series of poetry workshops with eleven amazing teens from Joan Farley Academy. The workshops guided the teenagers in developing, editing, and performing their own slam poems Andrea stretches this notion to its extreme, using graphs, numerical data, and information batching to visually quantify an experience that defies linear expression.  She also employs performance poetry and storytelling to connect the dots and give context to the visual art.
